As Andy Burnham enters Downing Street, it is clear there is much to do to get the construction industry and the home building market back working again. Difficult decisions lie ahead in terms of funding public infrastructure as an engine room for economic growth versus competing priorities on welfare and defence spending. In addition the current new build housing market undoubtedly requires some form of intervention to underpin development activity, whether it be an affordable homes building programme or demand side support for first time buyers. It feels like the time is right for a policy reset which leverages the huge potential of construction to drive growth.
The construction industry stands ready to deliver growth but it is now for Government to give it the firm demand side signals that will instill confidence in the future pipeline and in turn drive investment in capacity building, including skills and training.
