Sub-Title: Admiralty Arch, The Mall is a Grade I listed building which forms part of the Queen Victoria memorial, designed by Sir Aston Webb in 1901. Admiralty Arch is a formal entrance to the royal processional route down The Mall to Buckingham Palace. The asset, owned by Roundstone West Ltd, is undergoing a significant redevelopment converting it into a Waldorf Astoria hotel with ancillary uses.
The Admiralty Arch development in Westminster is located a short walk from Charing Cross and Embankment stations, positioned adjacent to Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace, making it a passageway between two historic landmarks. It will comprise 116 units spread across 2 cores, part hotel and private residences. The overall scheme for the hotel has significant public benefits by opening up the building to members of the public and allowing them to experience the unique views from Admiralty Arch for the first time.
The establishment of a luxury first-class hotel requires successful and high-quality function, food and beverage and leisure spaces. The hotel will have two entrances, one in the North block facing Trafalgar Square serving the main hotel reception and hotel facilities, and the other in the South block off New Road for hotel resident guest entrance to their bedrooms and suites. The development will include two signature restaurants, a hotel bar, gym and spa and ballroom/events space. The project has included the creation of 2 basement levels for ancillary hotel facilities and plant outside of the footprint of the listed building, accessed via subterranean links underneath the building.
The proposals for the building are a scholarly restoration to the original Aston Webb design, rather than a basic refurbishment approach, which would have been acceptable given the current condition of the interior and level of change that has occurred over time. The restoration approach will enhance this Grade 1 listed building of exceptional importance and therefore offers a very significant public benefit.
