As part of his latest Building Magazine article, Cast CEO, Mark Farmer discusses the challenges facing the property, investment and construction industries in addressing the whole life decarbonisation challenge. With current near term focus on energy efficiency it would be easy to forget about the looming long term issues related to the embodied carbon implications of what we build and the whole life journey of those assets. With so much attention being paid to current economic and political events the danger is that the more fundamental questions of whether we should build something, what it is and how do we build it become lost. The ability to measure and evaluate Whole Life Carbon (WLC) is going to become more important and will impact all property and construction professionals as well as challenge existing institutional norms regarding funding, risk and assurance.
